Selaginella braunii (involvens)

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-10

Selaginella braunii (also known in older texts as Selaginella involvens) belongs to one of the oldest surviving plant lineages on Earth. The Selaginella genus traces its ancestry back more than 300 million years, long before flowering plants reshaped the botanical world. In the shaded understories of ancient forests, these “spike mosses” held their ground, and S. braunii carries that lineage forward with quiet dignity.

Native to the cool, humid woodlands of China and parts of East Asia, Selaginella braunii was admired early on by plant collectors for its evergreen longevity and its refined, lace-like foliage. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries—when the Western world was infatuated with exotic ferns and fern-like curiosities—Selaginella species made their way into conservatories and shaded Victorian gardens. While some Selaginella relatives became known for dramatic “resurrection” behavior, S. braunii earned a different reputation: steady, handsome, and utterly unfussy when given moisture and shade.

In horticulture, it’s praised for the very qualities that helped it survive for millennia—its low, creeping growth; its ability to knit subtle green texture through damp soil; and its reliable evergreen presence in even the dimmer corners of the garden. It behaves like a living understory tapestry: dense enough to be noticed, restrained enough to let more expressive woodland plants shine.

Placed beneath camellias, tucked into mossy stonework, or allowed to meander along the edges of a shaded path, Selaginella braunii brings a sense of continuity—linking today’s gardens with the deep botanical past. There’s an elegance in that persistence, the kind of quiet beauty that rewards gardeners who appreciate plants with a story older than time itself.

Sun Requirements

  • Shade to Part Shade — This plant naturally grows in forest understories and thrives where light is filtered or indirect.
  • Avoid direct afternoon sun — Harsh sun will scorch the delicate foliage and dry the plant out quickly.
  • Morning sun is acceptable if the site stays consistently moist.

Soil Requirements

  • Moist, well-drained soil — Selaginella braunii prefers soils that stay evenly damp but not waterlogged.
  • High organic content — Think compost-rich woodland soil with leaf mold or fine bark.
  • Slightly acidic to neutral pH — About the same conditions favored by camellias, ferns, and many woodland natives.
  • Consistent moisture is key — It does not tolerate drying out; mulching helps maintain the cool, damp microclimate it loves.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
