Gemmiferous Spikemoss

Selaginella moellendorffii

$18.00

| Hardiness Zones 7-10

Selaginella moellendorffii is one of those rare plants that quietly reminds us just how ancient and astonishing the plant kingdom can be. A member of the storied Selaginella lineage—survivors from the Carboniferous forests—this species brings a bit of deep botanical time into the modern shade garden.

Native to East and Southeast Asia, S. moellendorffii naturally threads its way through moist woodland floors, forming soft, bright-green mats that stay lush even when the rest of the understory sulks through summer heat. Its finely textured foliage has the same fern-like delicacy many gardeners love, but with an almost luminous quality in the right light—like moss that decided to grow a bit taller and carry itself with more elegance.

In horticultural circles, Selaginella moellendorffii has held special interest for more than its good looks. Throughout the 20th century, botanists prized it as a model organism for understanding plant evolution—its simple vascular system and humble architecture offering clues to how early land plants made their way into the world. Long before it appeared in ornamental gardens, it appeared in laboratories and botanical collections, where researchers traced the story of plants through its ancient traits.

And yet despite this academic fame, S. moellendorffii is wonderfully down-to-earth for gardeners. Give it shade, steady moisture, and a cool, organic-rich soil, and it will settle in happily, weaving soft green texture through shaded beds, stones, or the edges of a woodland path. It spreads gently rather than aggressively—more companion than conqueror—and keeps its fresh green color all year in mild climates.

For anyone who delights in plants with lineage, subtlety, and an almost prehistoric grace, Selaginella moellendorffii is the kind of quiet treasure that enriches a garden without clamoring for attention. A living relic, offered with the Woodlanders spirit of curiosity and care.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
