cistus-x-corbariensis-c-hybridus
Cistus x corbariensis (C. hybridus)

Cistus x corbariensis is a white rockrose, one of the toughest and most charming of the Mediterranean sun shrubs, covered through late spring and early summer in flowers like small single roses. Each bloom is pure white with a gold eye, the petals crinkled like tissue paper, opening from buds tinged red and lasting a single day before the next takes over. Despite the name, a rockrose is no relation to the true roses, belonging instead to the Cistaceae, the rockrose family of the dry Mediterranean hills.

This particular rockrose is a natural-looking hybrid of two Mediterranean species, Cistus populifolius and Cistus salviifolius, named for the Corbieres hills of southern France. The low, mounding shrub holds small, wavy-edged, gray-green evergreen leaves the year round, and the whole plant has the lean, sun-loving constitution of the Mediterranean, thriving on heat, drought, and poor, stony ground. Bees work the fleeting flowers through the long bloom.

Rockrose asks for two things above all, full sun and sharp drainage, and repays them with months of bloom on almost no water. What the plant will not forgive is a wet winter or rich, heavy soil, so in the humid Southeast the rockrose does best on a raised bed, a slope, or gritty, fast-draining ground where the roots stay dry in the cold months. One of the hardiest of the rockroses, this hybrid holds through the low twenties, into the warmer parts of zone 7.

Use Cistus x corbariensis in a Mediterranean, gravel, or coastal garden, on a hot dry bank, or along a sunny, well-drained border where little else will bloom so freely on so little care. Drought tolerant, salt tolerant, and left alone by deer, the shrub earns a place wherever summer is hot and water is scarce. Trim lightly after flowering to keep the mound neat, but never cut back hard into old, bare wood.

Additional photos courtesy of Oregon State University
