phoenix-canariensis
Phoenix canariensis

Phoenix canariensis, the Canary Island Date Palm, is a massive feather-leaf palm with a trunk nearly three feet through and a crown of long, arching, deep green fronds, the palm of grand avenues and old hotel lawns. Old specimens stand in Charleston, and the species is hardier than the tropical look suggests. Plants are male or female, and the yellow flowers of each sex hang on separate trees, so fruit is rare in a lone specimen.

Our stock grew from seed collected in Mendoza, Argentina, at the dry, cold-winter foot of the Andes, chosen for exactly that reason: a palm that had already met frost. Best in fertile, moist soil, with a heavy winter mulch for young plants where palms are marginal, or a pot indoors through the first winter. A reference listing for a palm we have grown and offered.
