The shrub suckers gently into a loose colony four to eight feet high, and asks for the usual native-azalea comforts: light or dappled shade, and moist but well-drained, acidic, humus-rich soil. Close kin to the sweeter-scented Piedmont azalea, Rhododendron canescens, pinxterbloom carries the family north and blooms a little more quietly.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOne honest caution: like all the azaleas and rhododendrons, every part of the plant carries grayanotoxins and is poisonous if eaten, so keep the shrub away from where children or livestock might browse it.
