Woodlanders has been shipping mail-order plants since 1979, and we've got a somewhat unique way of preparing and shipping our plants to their new home. If you have any doubts about what size, condition and packaging our plants will arrive in, you've come to the right place!
Click here to access specific care instructions and diagnose any issues for your particular plant(s).
1. Size All of our plants are shipped in 1 gallon size. With our ever-evolving collection of rare plants, we list our plants as soon as they are 100% ready to be transported and planted in your garden! Starting in our propagation house, growing into a strong young plant, and transitioning into the great outdoors, we keep up with the demand for our plants by shipping them in a smaller 1 gallon size. We do not currently offer more mature plants -- we are currently exploring options to do so. |
|
2. Condition All plants are thoroughly watered and properly fertilized prior to arriving at your doorstep. We carefully remove the plant from its pot, condense the dirt into a circular shape and wrap it in a tight plastic bag. |
|
3. Packaging We secure a plastic bag around the condensed dirt and roots to hold in moisture and protect the root system during shipping. We use recycled newspaper to pad around each plant, always opting to increase the box size to avoid compressing the plant stems and leaves. We continue to research and improve the sustainability of our packaging supplies. |
What to Do Once You've Received Your Order:
To ensure your plant thrives in its new home, follow these steps as soon as your package is delivered:
-
Unbox Carefully:
- Open the package gently to avoid damaging the plant. Use scissors or a box cutter to cut the tape, taking care not to cut too deeply.
- Remove any packing materials such as paper, bubble wrap, or plastic that are protecting the plant.
-
Acclimate the Plant:
- Allow the plant to acclimate to its new environment. Place it in a shaded, sheltered area for 24-48 hours before moving it to its permanent location.
- Avoid direct sunlight initially, as the plant may be stressed from shipping.
-
Water the Plant:
- Check the soil moisture. If the soil feels dry to the touch, water the plant thoroughly.
- If the soil is still moist, wait a day or two before watering to avoid overwatering.
-
Remove Excess Packaging:
- If the plant is wrapped in any protective material (like plastic or paper around the roots), remove it to allow the plant to breathe.
-
Potting or Planting:
-
- Prepare the New Pot or Planting Area: Ensure the pot has drainage holes and is filled with appropriate soil for your plant. If planting outdoors, prepare the soil as recommended for your plant species.
- Transplant the Plant: Gently remove the plant from its current pot, being careful not to damage the roots. Place it in the new pot or planting area and fill with soil around the roots, firming it gently.
- Water Thoroughly: After potting or planting, water the plant thoroughly to help settle the soil and eliminate air pockets around the roots.
-
-
Provide Appropriate Light:
- Gradually introduce the plant to its recommended light conditions. If the plant prefers bright light, place it in a well-lit area but avoid direct sunlight for the first few days.
-
Monitor and Care:
- Keep an eye on the plant over the next few days. Ensure it is not exposed to extreme temperatures, drafts, or direct sunlight until it has fully acclimated.
- Continue to water and care for the plant according to its specific needs.
-
Fertilize if Needed:
- Depending on the type of plant, you may need to wait a few weeks before fertilizing. Follow the recommended care instructions for your specific plant species.
By following these steps, you'll help ensure that your new plant adjusts smoothly to its new environment and continues to grow healthily. Enjoy your new addition to your home or garden!
