Ponderosa Lemon

Citrus 'Ponderosa'

$32.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 9-11

The Ponderosa lemon is a remarkable citrus hybrid known for its massive, bumpy fruit and rich history. Originally discovered as a seedling in the late 19th century, the Ponderosa lemon was traditionally believed to be a cross between a lemon (Citrus limon) and a citron (Citrus medica). There has been some debate and discussion around the correct scientific name for the Ponderosa lemon, especially in light of recent genetic findings. Traditionally, the Ponderosa lemon has been classified as Citrus x limon 'Ponderosa', suggesting that it is a hybrid involving the lemon (Citrus limon) and citron (Citrus medica). However, recent genetic research has unveiled a more fascinating lineage, revealing that the Ponderosa lemon is actually a hybrid between a citron and a pomelo (Citrus maxima), with no significant genetic contribution from the true lemon. Given these findings, some experts argue that the name Citrus x limon 'Ponderosa' might not be entirely accurate. Instead, they suggest that a name reflecting its citron and pomelo parentage could be more appropriate. However, as of now, the name Citrus x limon 'Ponderosa' is still widely used in horticultural circles, largely because it has been the established name for over a century and is recognized by gardeners, nurseries, and botanical institutions.

This unique parentage explains the Ponderosa lemon’s distinctive characteristics, such as its large size—often weighing between 2-4 pounds—thick, bumpy rind, and intense citrus fragrance. The fruit retains a tart, juicy flavor similar to a traditional lemon, making it perfect for culinary uses, but with the added novelty of its enormous size.

The Ponderosa lemon tree is an evergreen that can grow between 6-12 feet tall, making it ideal for both garden planting in warmer climates (USDA Zones 9-11) and container gardening in cooler regions. Its beautiful, purple-tinged flowers bloom year-round, adding ornamental value to this already impressive citrus tree. The tree thrives in full sun and well-draining, slightly acidic soil, and it requires protection from frost, making it a versatile plant for various growing conditions.

Whether you're a citrus enthusiast or simply looking for a unique addition to your garden, the Ponderosa lemon offers a blend of history, beauty, and practicality. Its striking appearance and rich genetic heritage make it a conversation piece and a valuable asset in any citrus collection.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 9 - 11

Soil: Well-drained

Sun: Full Sun

Seasonal Behavior: Dies back, depends on zone

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 6 - 12 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 4 - 6 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are dark green, glossy, and lance-shaped, providing a lush backdrop to the tree's flowers and fruit.

Flowers: Produces large, fragrant, white to pale pink flowers in clusters, typically blooming in spring. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators.

Fruit: Bears large, thick-skinned, bumpy lemons that can weigh up to 2-4 pounds. The fruit is acidic and juicy, similar to regular lemons, and can be used in the same way.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun. Ponderosa lemon trees thrive in full sunlight, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and fruit production. If grown indoors, place the plant near a south-facing window to ensure it receives sufficient light. In low-light situations, supplemental grow lights can be beneficial.

Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Ponderosa lemon trees grow best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.5-6.5. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, amending it with sand, perlite, or organic matter like compost can improve drainage and create a more suitable environment for the tree.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. During the winter, reduce watering frequency, allowing the soil to dry out more between watering. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. Ponderosa lemon trees prefer warm temperatures and are not frost-tolerant. They thrive in temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C) during the growing season. In cooler climates, consider growing them in containers that can be moved indoors during winter. They prefer moderate to high humidity levels, so misting the leaves or using a humidity tray can be beneficial if grown indoors.

Fertilization: Apply a citrus-specific fertilizer in early spring. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and contains essential micronutrients such as magnesium, iron, and zinc. Fertilize every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring through summer). Reduce or stop fertilization in the fall and winter when the tree's growth naturally slows down.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Pruning helps maintain the tree's shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation. For container-grown Ponderosa lemons, regular pruning also helps control the size of the tree, making it more manageable. Remove any suckers that grow from the base or along the trunk to direct energy toward fruit production.

Pests and Problems: Generally resistant to many pests but may occasionally be affected by common citrus pests such as aphids, spider mites, or scale insects. Ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues like sooty mold or root rot. If pests are detected, treat with appropriate measures such as insecticidal soap, neem oil, or horticultural oils.
