1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9

A striking evergreen bottlebrush shrub, Callistemon sp. 'Woodlanders Hardy' is known for its arching form and vibrant, bright red “bottlebrush” flowers that bloom in late spring. Originally distributed by Woodlanders as Callistemon sieberi—a name now considered incorrect due to flower color (true C. sieberi has yellow flowers)—this selection has proven to be surprisingly cold hardy, reliably surviving winters as far north as Raleigh, North Carolina.

Perfect for a sunny or partly shaded garden, this low-maintenance shrub thrives in average, well-drained soil and adds bold seasonal color and evergreen structure to the landscape. Its unusual hardiness, floriferous nature, and adaptable size make it a standout choice for southern gardens, coastal landscapes, and mild winter zones.

Native to Australia, this bottlebrush is beloved for its ornamental value and ability to attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.

Flower/Foliage

Flower Description:

The vivid red flowers of Callistemon sp. ‘Woodlanders Hardy’ appear in dense, cylindrical spikes that resemble old-fashioned bottlebrushes—hence the common name. Each “brush” is composed of hundreds of long, filamentous stamens tipped with golden anthers, creating a brilliant, bristly effect that glows in the spring landscape. Blooming primarily in late spring, flowers may appear sporadically through summer and early fall in warm regions. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees and hummingbirds.

Foliage Description:

The narrow, lance-shaped leaves are a soft, mid-green color with a slight bluish cast, arranged alternately along the branches. When young, the leaves may be flushed with bronze or coppery tones, maturing to a leathery texture that holds well year-round. The foliage emits a subtle, lemony fragrance when crushed—common to many members of the Myrtle family—and provides a handsome evergreen backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the vivid red flowers.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
