Heimia salicifolia

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

This spreading and much-branched smooth shrub looks very much like a Hypericum but is not related. It is actually related to Crepe Myrtle! The axillary flowers are yellow and followed by a dry capsule. This plant is said to have medicinal and mildly narcotic properties. It grows well in ordinary garden soil in sunny sites with adequate moisture. Native primarly south of the U.S. but range extends into southern Texas.

Hardiness Zones: 8 - 10

Soil: Well-drained

Sun: Full Sun and Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Dies back, depends on zone

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 4 - 8 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 4 - 6 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and resemble willow leaves, giving the plant its specific name, "salicifolia."

Flowers: Produces small, bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers from mid-summer to fall. The flowers are typically about 1 inch in diameter and appear along the stems.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Heimia salicifolia thrives best in bright, direct sunlight, which encourages vigorous growth and blooming. In areas with intense sunlight, some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from potential leaf scorch.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. This plant is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, provided they have good drainage. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0-7.0. Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and structure, promoting healthy root development.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Heimia salicifolia is somewhat drought-tolerant once established but will perform best with regular watering during dry periods. Ensure that the plant does not sit in soggy soil, as this can lead to root rot.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. Heimia salicifolia prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate some drought conditions, making it well-suited to subtropical and tropical climates. It does not tolerate frost well, so in cooler regions, it should be grown in containers that can be moved indoors during the winter months or in a greenhouse.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional application in mid-summer can promote continuous growth and flowering. The plant benefits from organic fertilizers such as compost tea or fish emulsion, which provide essential nutrients without the risk of over-fertilization.

Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged stems. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and helps maintain a compact form. After flowering, cutting back the stems slightly can encourage more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant and not prone to serious diseases. However, Heimia salicifolia may occasionally attract common garden pests such as aphids or spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent any fungal issues. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
