1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-9

Oakleaf Hydrangea is a large deciduous shrub with large oak-like leaves, panicles of white flowers, and exfoliating bark, this species is native almost exclusively to rich woods in Alabama but is very widely grown as a favored ornamental shrub. 'Snowflake' is one of our favorites. It was found and named by Eddie Aldridge of Aldridge Gardens in Hoover, AL and is outstanding for it's long 15 inch dense panicles of double flowers with imbricated bracts. It is now widely grown in southern gardens and deservedly so. Plant in fertile well-drained but moist soil in shady or semi-shady sites or even in full sun with mulch and irrigation.

Soil: Well-drained and Fertile

Sun: Full Sun and Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 8 - 10 feet

Spread at Maturity: 8 - 10 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are large, deeply lobed, and resemble oak leaves. They are dark green in summer, turning rich shades of red, purple, and bronze in the fall.

Flowers: Produces large, double-flowered, conical blooms that start white and gradually turn pinkish as they age. The flowers are more densely packed than those of other oakleaf hydrangeas, creating a cascading "snowflake" effect. Blooms appear from late spring to early summer and can persist into fall, providing long-lasting beauty in the garden.

12 to 15 inch long inflorescences, double, white, may cause branches to arch slightly, May-June

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full sun. Hydrangea quercifolia "Snowflake" thrives best in areas with morning sun and afternoon shade, particularly in warmer climates. While it can tolerate full sun, especially in cooler regions, too much direct sunlight in hot areas can cause the foliage to scorch and reduce flower production. Aim for 4-6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. "Snowflake" prefers rich, loamy soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5-6.5). It can adapt to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, provided they drain well. Adding organic matter such as compost or leaf mold improves soil fertility and moisture retention, which is essential for healthy growth and blooming.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. "Snowflake" is relatively drought-tolerant once established but performs best with consistent moisture. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature, which is particularly beneficial during hot, dry spells.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. "Snowflake" is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate cold winters. It prefers moderate to high humidity levels but can adapt to varying conditions. Protect the plant from harsh winds and extreme frost to ensure it remains healthy throughout the growing season.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. A second application in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during the peak blooming period. Use a fertilizer specifically designed for hydrangeas or a balanced formula with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Avoid over-fertilization, as it can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since "Snowflake" blooms on old wood, avoid heavy pruning, which could reduce the number of flowers for the following season. Remove dead or weak stems and shape the plant as needed. If the plant becomes too large, prune after flowering to control its size without sacrificing the next year's blooms.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by aphids, spider mites, or leaf spot. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and good garden hygiene can help maintain plant health.
