Flower Description for Nerium oleander "Double Pink":

  • Color: The flowers are a rich, soft pink with deeper pink tones at the center.
  • Shape: The flowers are double-petaled, giving them a lush, layered appearance. Each bloom is made up of multiple overlapping petals, forming a rosette-like shape.
  • Size: Individual flowers are about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in diameter.
  • Fragrance: Some varieties of Nerium oleander have a light fragrance, but "Double Pink" is generally considered to have a subtle to mild scent.
  • Blooming Season: Blooms appear in late spring through fall, often continuing until the first frost in warmer climates. The flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the branches, providing a showy display.

Foliage Description:

  • Color: The leaves are a deep, glossy green, offering a strong contrast to the bright pink flowers.
  • Shape: The leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, with a pointed tip and smooth margins. Each leaf is about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide.
  • Texture: The foliage is thick, leathery, and smooth to the touch, with a glossy sheen that reflects light.
  • Growth Habit: The leaves grow in whorls of three along the stems, giving the plant a full, lush appearance. As an evergreen in warm climates, Nerium oleander "Double Pink" retains its foliage year-round, adding structure and color to the landscape.

Light Requirements:

Nerium oleander "Double Pink" thrives in full sun, which helps promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. It can tolerate partial shade, but for the best flower production, aim for 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

Soil:

Oleanders are not very picky about soil but prefer well-drained soil. They can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or even poor soils, as long as drainage is adequate. A slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.5–7.5) works well for this plant. Amending the soil with compost can enhance growth.

Watering:

Once established, Nerium oleander is drought-tolerant but will bloom more profusely with regular watering. Water deeply when the top inch of soil is dry, especially during hot, dry weather. Avoid overwatering, as the plant is susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions. In drought-prone areas, reducing water once established will still support healthy growth.

Temperature and Humidity:

Oleanders thrive in warm climates and are hardy in USDA zones 8–11. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 15°F (-9°C), though frost may damage new growth. In colder climates, it is best to plant Nerium oleander "Double Pink" in containers that can be brought indoors during winter or provide protection with mulch and covers.

Fertilization:

Fertilize in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms. A second light feeding in mid-summer can help maintain vigorous growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can reduce flowering.

Pruning:

Pruning is beneficial to shape the plant, control its size, and remove dead or damaged branches. Prune in late winter or early spring, cutting back about one-third of the stems to encourage bushier growth. Deadhead spent blooms throughout the growing season to promote more flowers.

Propagation:

Nerium oleander "Double Pink" can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late spring or summer. The cuttings root easily in water or soil. It can also be grown from seed, but cuttings are preferred for faster growth and to maintain the double-pink flower trait.

Pests and Diseases:

Oleanders are generally hardy, but they can occasionally face issues with scale insects, aphids, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Root rot may occur in poorly drained soils, and oleander leaf scorch, caused by bacteria, can also be a concern in some areas.

Toxicity:

Nerium oleander is highly toxic to humans, pets, and livestock if ingested. Handle the plant with care, particularly when pruning, as the sap can cause skin irritation. Ensure children and pets do not chew or eat any part of the plant.
