Black Gum, known in the North as Tupelo or Pepperidge, is a medium to large deciduous tree native to eastern U.S. It is a very desirable landscape tree valued for the brilliant orange-red fall color. It is adaptable to various soil types but is not commonly available from nurseries in large sizes because it is not readily transplanted. Other native Nyssa species are wetland plants but this species grows naturally on upland sites.
