PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 5 - 10

Soil: Wet and Average

Sun: Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Fast

Height at Maturity: 6 - 12 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 6 - 8 Feet

Flower Structure: Produces spherical clusters of small, fragrant white flowers.

Blooming Season: Blooms from late spring to early summer, often continuing into early fall.

Color: The flowers are typically white to creamy-white, creating a striking visual display against the green foliage.

1 to 1.25 inch creamy white, June-August

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the best growth and flower production, but it can tolerate light shade, especially in warmer climates.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in moist to wet, poorly drained soils. It is highly adaptable to various soil types, including clay, loamy, and sandy soils, but performs best in acidic to neutral pH (5.5-7.0). It can tolerate periods of flooding and is often found in wetlands, swamps, and along the edges of ponds and streams.

Watering: Requires consistent moisture. Water deeply to ensure the soil remains consistently wet or very moist. Buttonbush can tolerate standing water and is an excellent choice for rain gardens or areas with poor drainage.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Prefers moderate to warm temperatures and high humidity. It is tolerant of cold winters but may benefit from some protection in the coldest parts of its range.

Fertilization: Generally does not require regular fertilization if planted in rich, organic soil. If growth appears slow, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An annual application of compost can also enhance soil fertility.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to maintain a desired shape. Buttonbush can be pruned back hard to encourage more compact growth and rejuvenate older plants. Light pruning throughout the growing season can help control size and shape.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for wetland areas, rain gardens, and as a marginal plant around ponds and streams. Its attractive, fragrant flowers and unique seed heads add ornamental value to naturalized and water garden settings. It is also beneficial for wildlife, providing nectar for pollinators and seeds for birds.
