Low Stock

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 6-9

Our friend Ted Stephens at Nurseries Caroliniana says: "This plant has to be one of my top 10 favorites." It will reach 8 feet plus and flowers from late March to October. Wonderful background in a perennial border as it produces spikes of pea-like flowers at EVERY node.

The first spikes which began to form in March will still be putting on new flowers in October. Unbelievable!! Plant in sunny or semi-shady spot with good soil. Native to China.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Indigofera amblyantha thrives in full sunlight, which encourages the best flowering and overall plant vigor. However, it can also tolerate partial shade, particularly in hotter climates where some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from extreme heat.

Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil. This plant grows best in rich, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (6.0-7.5). It is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, as long as they drain well. Adding organic matter, such as compost, will improve soil structure and support healthy growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. While Indigofera amblyantha is relatively drought-tolerant once established, it prefers consistently moist soil for optimal growth. Water deeply and regularly, particularly during the growing season, but avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 6-9. Indigofera amblyantha is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate mild frost. It thrives in areas with moderate humidity and is generally low-maintenance in terms of environmental needs.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its peak growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and encouraging lush growth.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning helps encourage bushier growth and more prolific flowering. After the flowering season, light pruning can also be done to tidy up the plant and encourage a second bloom in some climates.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant and disease-free. Indigofera amblyantha is a hardy plant with few common pest or disease issues. However, monitoring for any signs of fungal infections, especially in overly wet conditions, is advised. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with appropriate measures such as insecticidal soap or fungicides.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
