Euonymus sp.

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-10

This yet to be identified Euonymus is possibly E. aculeatus. It is a low trailing evergreen shrub with long-pointed, toothed, leaves about 2 inches long. A new introduction, it was collected by Frank Bell on Mt. Emei (Emeishan), Sichuan, China. It is an attractive plant that might be used as a groundcover in shady or semi-shady areas. The fruit is a bright red, spiky shape that is quite striking! We think she would be ideal for trellising as well.

Light Requirements: Euonymus species are adaptable to various light conditions. Most species prefer full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and vibrant foliage color, provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Some varieties, especially the variegated forms, may perform better with some protection from the intense midday sun, particularly in hotter climates.

Soil Requirements: Euonymus plants thrive in well-draining soil. They are adaptable to a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils, provided they drain well. The ideal pH range is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0). Incorporating organic matter like compost can improve soil structure and fertility.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the establishment phase. Once established, Euonymus plants are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, depending on the species. Euonymus species are generally tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels. Some species are more cold-hardy, while others may be better suited to warmer climates. Protect the plant from severe frost if it is grown in colder zones, and provide extra water during extremely hot weather.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional light application in mid-summer can promote continued growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of the plant's overall health.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. Euonymus species are tolerant of pruning and can be pruned hard if necessary to maintain size or encourage denser growth. Regular pruning helps maintain a tidy appearance and can also help prevent disease.

Pests and Problems: Euonymus species can be prone to certain pests such as scale insects, spider mites, and aphids. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant for signs of pests or disease to manage problems early.
