Showy Senna

Cassia bicapsularis

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

This subtropical shrub has abundant bright yellow flowers in late fall. It is evergreen in zone 10 and stem hardy in zone 9. The seeds are said to be poisonous but not deadly. In zone 8 it may freeze back but after cold kills the tops it can be cut back and mounded with coarse sand and mulched with pine straw. As weather warms, remove this covering to allow new shoots to emerge. Given rich soil and ample water, these plants will thrive during hot summers and bloom around Thanksgiving time. Riffle, in The Tropical Look says this plant is widespread in the American tropics but the exact native range is uncertain.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and blooming. It can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer flowers.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil and is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Adding organic matter like compost can improve soil fertility and drainage.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods and the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it can tolerate some drought but performs best with consistent moisture.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. Prefers warm temperatures and high humidity. It is frost-sensitive, so in cooler climates, consider growing it as an annual or providing winter protection.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. An additional application of compost or well-rotted manure can enhance soil fertility.

Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Light pruning helps promote new growth and a tidier appearance. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids and whiteflies. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for garden beds, borders, and as a specimen plant. Its bright yellow flowers and attractive foliage add a tropical feel to any landscape. It is also a magnet for butterflies, making it a great addition to butterfly gardens.
