This small to medium sized evergreen shrub with bright red "bottlebrush" flowers is a native of Australia. Callistemons are generally considered subtropical plants but this one has survived outside for years at Clemson, SC., an area generally considered too cold for Callistemon. It was introduced by Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana who notes that it re-blooms nicely through the summer.

Flower/Foliage

Flowers

Callistemon rigidus 'Clemson Hardy' produces striking, bright red, cylindrical flower spikes that resemble a bottlebrush, giving the plant its common name. These flowers emerge in late spring to early summer and may continue blooming sporadically throughout the growing season. The long, filament-like stamens create a soft, bristly texture that attracts pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Flowering is most prolific when the plant receives full sun and regular pruning after bloom cycles.

Fruit

After flowering, small, woody, capsule-like fruits form along the stems. These seed capsules are persistent and can remain on the plant for an extended period, often until the following season. Each capsule contains numerous tiny seeds, which can be dispersed naturally or collected for propagation. While the fruit is not particularly ornamental, it adds an interesting structural element to the plant.

Foliage

The foliage consists of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are deep green and have a leathery texture. New growth often emerges with a slightly reddish or bronze tint before maturing to its characteristic rich green. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems and exude a subtle, aromatic fragrance when crushed. This dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, making the plant an excellent choice for hedging, screening, or as a specimen shrub in the landscape.

Planting Location:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal blooming.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, or clay types. While adaptable, it does best in soils that prevent waterlogging. wilsonbrosgardens.com

Watering:

  • Establishment Period: After planting, water regularly to help establish a strong root system.
  • Mature Plants: Once established, the Clemson Hardy Bottlebrush is drought-tolerant and typically requires minimal watering. However, during prolonged dry spells, occasional deep watering can be beneficial.

Fertilization:

  • In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen, as they may promote leaf growth over blooms.

Pruning:

  • Prune after the main flowering period to maintain the desired shape and size. Removing spent flowers can encourage additional blooming. The plant tolerates heavy pruning if necessary.

Pest and Disease Management:

  • Generally resistant to pests and diseases. Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to prevent potential fungal issues.

Cold Hardiness:

  • Suitable for USDA zones 7a through 10.
