Cockspur Thorn

Cudrania cochinchinensis

$25.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9

This spiny sprawling or vining shrub has glossy evergreen leaves. It is sometimes classified as a Maclura and is related to our Osage Orange. Apparently widespread in eastern Asia down to Australia it seems rare and little known in North America. Perhaps known to some bonsai enthusiasts. We encountered this plant years ago at Pinewood Estate, a winter home built in the 1930's in the exclusive Mountain Lake development at Lake Wales, Florida. We don't know original source but have not encountered it elsewhere. Propagated and planted in Aiken South Carolina it thrived for many years in a sunny location with well-drained sandy soll until it was finally removed. We continue to make rare plants available. Fruit is supposedly edible but plant is apparently dioecious and sex of this clone is unknown.

This plant prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It can grow in a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they have good drainage.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and fruiting, ensure the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer fruits.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and structure. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-draining.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply to ensure the root zone is adequately hydrated. Established plants can tolerate short periods of drought but perform best with consistent moisture.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 6-9. Prefers moderate to warm temperatures and can tolerate a range of humidity levels. It is adaptable to various climates within its hardiness zones but should be protected from extreme cold and heat.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant fruit production. An annual application of compost or well-rotted manure can further enhance soil fertility. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree. Light pruning helps maintain a tidy appearance and promotes better air circulation. Remove any suckers that emerge at the base of the plant to maintain its shape.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids, scale insects, and borers. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the tree for any signs of disease or pest infestation.

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
