Gardenia Cultivar

Gardenia sp. 'Variegata'

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-9

This striking rather upright Gardenia is a Woodlanders' introduction that has become more widely available. We received this plant many years ago from Brookside Gardens in Maryland after they had found it in Japan. Leaves have strong yellow variegation. The single white flowers seem to be rarely produced. It has been hardy here to at least 11 degrees F. Suitable also for cool greenhouses.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full sun. Variegated gardenias require bright, indirect light to maintain the best leaf coloration. Full sun can be tolerated, especially in cooler climates, but too much direct sunlight in hot regions can scorch the leaves, particularly the lighter, variegated parts.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, acidic soil. The ideal pH range is 5.0-6.0. Variegated gardenias prefer soil rich in organic matter, such as compost or peat moss. If the soil is heavy or clay-like, amending it with organic materials will improve drainage and promote healthy root development.

Watering: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is recommended to encourage deep root growth. During the growing season, ensure the plant receives enough water, especially during dry spells. Mulching can help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-9. Variegated gardenias prefer warm, humid conditions and are sensitive to cold temperatures. Protect the plant from temperatures below 40°F (4°C). High humidity is beneficial for maintaining healthy foliage and reducing the risk of leaf drop.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again in mid-summer. Iron supplements may be necessary if the leaves show signs of chlorosis (yellowing). Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause nutrient imbalances and potentially burn the roots.

Pruning: Prune lightly after the blooming period to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning helps maintain a compact form and encourages bushier growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as gardenias bloom on old wood, and excessive cutting back can reduce the number of blooms the following season.

Pests and Problems: Variegated gardenias can be susceptible to pests such as aphids, spider mites, and scale. Fungal issues like sooty mold can also occur, especially in high humidity. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant to catch any issues early.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
