$19.00 Sold out

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-8

This Hosta species was introduced from an island off Korea by our plantsman friend Barry Yinger for whom this previously undescribed species was named. It is distinctive for its very glossy leaves. It has grown well here in South Carolina and deserves to be better known. Plant in the shady or semi-shady woodland garden or border where there is good soil and adequate moisture.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 5 - 8

Soil: Well-drained and Fertile

Sun: Part Shade and Full Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Dies back, depends on zone

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 15 - 18 Inches

Spread at Maturity: 15 - 18 Inches

Foliage: The leaves are dark green, heart-shaped, and slightly glossy, providing a lush backdrop to the flowers.

Flowers: Produces lavender, bell-shaped flowers on tall scapes in late summer to early fall. The flowers rise above the foliage and are particularly attractive to pollinators like bees.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. Hosta yingeri thrives in shaded environments, making it ideal for woodland gardens or areas with limited direct sunlight. It can tolerate some morning sun, but intense afternoon sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. Hosta yingeri prefers rich, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). The soil should be high in organic matter, such as compost or leaf mold, to retain moisture while providing good drainage. The plant can adapt to various soil types but requires consistent moisture for optimal growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Hosta yingeri appreciates deep watering that reaches the roots, particularly during the growing season. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulates soil temperature.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Hosta yingeri is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate cold winters. It prefers moderate to high humidity levels but can adapt to varying conditions. The plant is winter-hardy and will go dormant in cold weather, with new growth emerging in the spring.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional light feeding in mid-summer can help sustain vigor during the growing season. Organic compost or a mild liquid fertilizer can also be used to provide nutrients. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to lush foliage with fewer flowers.

Pruning: Prune away spent flowers and damaged or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and encourage new growth. In late fall, after the foliage has died back, cut the plant to the ground to prepare it for winter dormancy. This helps reduce the risk of pests and diseases overwintering in the plant debris.

Pests and Problems: Hosta yingeri is susceptible to common hosta pests such as slugs, snails, and deer. Slug bait or organic slug control methods can help protect the plant from damage. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with appropriate controls, such as insecticidal soap or neem oil.
