Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. The variegated form of Illicium floridanum thrives best in shaded environments, which help preserve the striking coloration of its leaves. Morning sun with afternoon shade or dappled light throughout the day is ideal. Too much direct sunlight can cause the variegation to fade and may scorch the leaves.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This plant grows well in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.0-6.5. Like its non-variegated counterpart, it is adapted to wetland areas and prefers consistently moist soil. Incorporating organic matter such as compost or peat moss into the soil will improve fertility and drainage, which is crucial for healthy growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering to maintain consistently moist soil. Variegated Florida Anise does not tolerate drought well and needs to be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce the frequency of watering needed.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. This plant prefers warm, humid conditions and can tolerate mild frost. It thrives in temperate to subtropical climates and benefits from consistent humidity. In regions with colder winters, protection from frost may be necessary.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Additional fertilization in mid-summer can help sustain the plant through its active growing period. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can be particularly beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and promoting lush, healthy growth.

Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant's shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Pruning is generally minimal for variegated Illicium floridanum, but it can help maintain a more compact, bushy form. If the plant becomes too large or needs rejuvenation, it can be pruned more heavily in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but the plant may be prone to root rot if the soil is too wet and not well-draining. Ensuring that the soil drains properly and avoiding waterlogged conditions is key to preventing this issue. The variegated variety is also resistant to deer browsing, making it a good choice for gardens in areas with deer populations.
