This Chinese evergreen shrub in the Witchazel family can become almost tree-like. It has small dark green leaves and the common form has abundant white fragrant flowers in early spring. The flowers have little filamentous narrow petals giving a fringe like effect and a common name of Chinese Fringetree (which is really more properly applied to another plant, Chimonanthus retusus). Many purple leaf and pink flowered forms of this species have become very popular in recent years. This one,'Zhuzhou Fuchsia' was originally introduced from China by the U.S. National Arboretum. Flower Description:

Loropetalum chinense 'Zhuzhou Fuchsia' produces vibrant fuchsia-pink, fringe-like flowers that bloom profusely in early to mid-spring, with sporadic reblooms throughout the growing season. The flowers consist of narrow, ribbon-like petals, giving them a unique, delicate, and slightly whimsical appearance. Arranged in small clusters, the blooms stand out brilliantly against the dark foliage, creating a striking contrast in the garden.

Foliage Description:

The foliage of 'Zhuzhou Fuchsia' is a standout feature, with deep burgundy to dark purple leaves that retain their rich color throughout the year in warmer climates. The leaves are oval to elliptical in shape, smooth-edged, and have a slightly glossy texture. Young growth often emerges in a brighter reddish hue before maturing into its darker tones, adding dynamic color variation. The dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and serves as an excellent backdrop for the vivid flowers.

Loropetalum chinense 'Zhuzhou Fuchsia', commonly known as Zhuzhou Fuchsia Chinese Fringe Flower, is a striking evergreen shrub prized for its deep burgundy foliage and vibrant fuchsia-colored, fringe-like flowers. To ensure its healthy growth and vibrant appearance, follow these care instructions:

Planting and Location:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For optimal foliage color and flowering, provide at least four hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, rich, loamy soils with an acidic to neutral pH (4.0 to 7.0). Incorporate organic matter to improve soil quality if necessary.
  • Spacing: When planting multiple shrubs, space them 6 to 8 feet apart to accommodate their mature size and ensure proper air circulation.

Watering:

  • Establishment Period: Water newly planted shrubs thoroughly and regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.
  • Established Plants: Once established, 'Zhuzhou Fuchsia' is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring as new growth begins. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates.

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune after flowering, typically in late spring to early summer, to maintain the desired shape and size.
  • Method: Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve air circulation and overall plant health. Light pruning encourages a more compact growth habit.

Mulching:

  • Apply a 2 to 4-inch layer of mulch, such as pine straw or shredded bark, around the base of the shrub to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Pests and Diseases:

  • 'Zhuzhou Fuchsia' is generally resistant to serious pests and diseases. However, monitor for common issues such as powdery mildew or leaf spots, especially in humid conditions. Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to minimize these problems.

Winter Care:

  • Hardy in USDA Zones 7 to 9. In colder regions, consider mulching around the base of the plant to protect the roots during winter. While evergreen in warmer climates, it may experience some leaf drop in colder areas.

Additional Considerations:

  • Landscape Use: 'Zhuzhou Fuchsia' makes an excellent specimen plant, hedge, or addition to mixed borders, providing year-round interest with its colorful foliage and flowers.
  • Wildlife Attraction: The vibrant flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enhancing the ecological value of your garden.
