Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum', the variegated Solomon's seal, is one of the most graceful of all shade perennials, an Old World cousin of the native Solomon's seals grown for luminous, cream-edged foliage on arching stems. Each lance-shaped leaf carries a soft green center rimmed and streaked in creamy white, and the new stems flush a warm rose before greening.

In late spring and early summer, small, creamy-white, green-tipped bell flowers dangle in pairs from the underside of the arching stems, softly and sweetly fragrant (the epithet odoratum means scented), and worked by bees. Small blue-black berries may follow in fall, and the foliage turns clear gold before dying back.

The arching, cascading stems and bright variegation make the plant a standout in shade, lighting a dim corner where plain green recedes. Spreading slowly by rhizome into dense, well-behaved colonies, variegated Solomon's seal knits beautifully among ferns, hostas, hellebores, and astilbe, and reads as elegant and composed in any woodland or shaded border.

Grow in part to full shade in moist, rich, well-drained soil, and shelter from harsh direct sun that can scorch the pale leaves. The rhizome of Solomon's seal has a long medicinal history in both Chinese and European traditions; the blue-black berries, though, are toxic if eaten, so site away from where small children graze.

Design Notes

Light for the shade garden. Use variegated Solomon's seal to brighten a dim corner: a shaded border, a woodland garden, a path edge, or a groundcover under trees, where the arching, cream-edged stems catch what little light reaches them. The graceful cascade and luminous variegation pair beautifully with ferns, hostas, hellebores, astilbe, and darker-leaved shade companions that throw the pale foliage forward. Give moist, rich, shaded ground, let a slow colony build, and enjoy a refined, deer-resistant classic; site the blue-black berries away from where small children graze.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Part to full shade; avoid harsh direct sun, which scorches the pale leaves.

Soil. Moist, rich, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral; amend with compost or leaf mold.

Water. Keep evenly moist; moderately drought tolerant once established but happiest with steady moisture.

Pruning. Little needed; let the foliage die back naturally in fall, and divide the rhizome every few years to spread or renew.

Hardiness. USDA zones 4 to 9.

History & tradition

Known in traditional Chinese medicine as yu zhu, the rhizome of Polygonatum odoratum has been used for centuries as a yin tonic to moisten dryness and generate fluids, chiefly for dry cough, dry throat, and thirst in the lungs and stomach, and for rheumatism and joint complaints. European and Western herbalists valued the same Solomon's seal root for tendons, ligaments, and joints, and modern pharmacological study has taken an interest in the saponins and polysaccharides behind the tradition. These are historical and traditional uses only. Nothing here is medical advice, and the plant is offered as an ornamental and ethnobotanical perennial rather than as a remedy.
