Pomegranate 'Eight Ball'
Punica granatum ‘Eight Ball’
1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9
A Dark Jewel of the Garden
There are plants that feed the body, and there are those that feed the imagination. The venerable pomegranate has long done both. Cultivated since antiquity in the dry gardens of Persia and the Levant, it traveled with caravans and conquests, bearing fruits the color of garnets and wrapped in centuries of myth. In the American South, it grew in the gardens of old plantations, a symbol of fertility and memory, often tucked near back doors where women used the seeds for jelly and children dared each other to taste the tart juice.
But from that ancient line has come a curious twist of nature. Punica granatum ‘Eight Ball’ is no ordinary heir. Where its ancestors bore fruit like fire, this singular specimen bears orbs the color of coal—round, dusky, and enigmatically black, like something glimpsed in a dream or plucked from a forgotten folktale. It is a plant that halts the passerby. One stares. One marvels.
Discovered and introduced in 1997 by our contemporary plant sage, Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery—himself as colorful a character as any in the annals of horticultural Americana—‘Eight Ball’ is a seedling that seems to have taken a darker turn in the story of the pomegranate, as if shaped by moonlight rather than sun.
It carries all the usual grace of the species: narrow, glossy leaves that dance in the wind, flamboyant orange blossoms that recall the bold prints of a country church dress, and, of course, the fruit. Yet here, the fruit is not bright and beckoning, but brooding, contemplative—a fruit for a different kind of feast.
Plant in full sun, in a well-drained spot, and give it the same affection one might give to a family heirloom—because this, truly, is a botanical one.
