Azalea, Red Hills

Rhododendron colemanii

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 6-9

The Red Hills Azalea is a recently recognized species of native deciduous azalea first described in 2008. It had previously been confused with Rhododendron alabamense which flowers earlier and has consistently white flowers with a yellow blotch. The Red Hills Azalea is more restricted in its distribution being known from the inner coastal plain of southwest Georgia and southern Alabama. It flowers in mid to late may and the flowers can be similar to R. alabamense or can be white, pink, or yellow with or without a blotch. It is typically a multi-stemmed shrub and is as yet little-known in cultivation. As with most native azaleas it should be planted in sandy acid soil that is well drained as the natural habitat is on slopes and along creeks.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 6 - 9

Soil: Well-drained, Moist, and Acid

Sun: Part Shade and Full Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 10 - 12 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 5 - 7 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are lance-shaped, medium to dark green, and provide a lush backdrop to the colorful flowers. The foliage turns yellow to bronze in the fall.

Flowers: Produces showy, fragrant flowers in shades of white, pink, or peach, often with a yellow or orange blotch, typically blooming in late spring to early summer. The flowers are tubular and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. Rhododendron colemanii thrives in woodland settings where it receives dappled sunlight or partial shade. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning, too much intense afternoon sun can cause stress and leaf scorch. Providing protection from the hottest part of the day is ideal.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This azalea grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 4.5-6.0. It is essential that the soil is well-draining, as Rhododendron colemanii does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Incorporating organic matter, such as compost, peat moss, or leaf mold, will improve soil structure, increase acidity, and retain moisture, creating an optimal environment for growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering to maintain consistently moist soil. Rhododendron colemanii prefers evenly moist soil, especially during the growing season. It does not tolerate drought well, so regular watering is essential, particularly during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and keeps the roots cool, which is crucial in warmer climates.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 6-9. Rhododendron colemanii is well-suited to temperate and subtropical climates. It can tolerate mild to moderate winters, making it ideal for gardens in the southeastern United States. The plant thrives in areas with high humidity, which aligns with its natural habitat in moist, forested regions.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. An additional light feeding in mid-summer can help sustain growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers and can potentially harm the plant's roots.

Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Rhododendron colemanii typically requires minimal pruning, as it naturally develops a pleasing shape. If necessary, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, but avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce the following year’s blooms.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by common azalea pests such as lace bugs, spider mites, or aphids. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or root rot. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with appropriate measures such as insecticidal soap or fungicides.
