Century Plant 'Splendida'

Agave lophantha "Splendida"

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-10

This small bright green Agave with a white center stripe on the short, broad, toothed leaves is a selection of a species native to south Texas and Mexico. This smaller more compact clumping selection was found some years ago near Jacksonville, Florida by our friend Joe Levert of Augusta, Georgia who has an amazing collection of palms, citrus, and other subtropicals on the campus of Aquinas High School. Joe shared this plant with our friend Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana who named it 'Splendida' and is credited with having introduced it. Like most Agaves it is a plant for sunny well-drained sites. Height listed is for the plant but the flower stalk on Agave is very much taller.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade, thriving best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil Requirements: Grows well in well-draining soil, such as sandy or gravelly mixes, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Watering: Drought-tolerant; water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, particularly during cooler months.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11, tolerating temperatures down to about 10°F (-12°C), and prefers dry to moderately humid conditions.

Fertilization: Requires minimal fertilization; a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring is typically sufficient.

Pruning: Prune by removing dead or damaged leaves to maintain appearance; handle with care due to sharp spines.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but monitor for signs of scale, mealybugs, and agave snout weevil; avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and container planting, making a striking addition with its variegated leaves and architectural form.

By following these care instructions, you can ensure a healthy and striking Agave lophantha "Splendida," known for its beautiful variegated foliage and low-maintenance needs.
