About the Groundcover Shrubs Collection
The plants that hug the ground tend to be the ones people walk past without noticing — until the garden they're in stops working without them.
Groundcover shrubs do the quiet, foundational things. They hold slopes, cover bare soil, suppress weeds, and build habitat at the level where most of the small life in a garden actually happens. Our selection leans hard into the native groundcover shrubs of the American Southeast, and a few of them are genuinely difficult to find anywhere else. Conradina canescens (Gray Conradina) is a low, aromatic mint-family shrub from Gulf Coast dunes that smells faintly of the place it comes from and asks for almost nothing in return — just sun and sharp drainage. Vaccinium crassifolium (Creeping Blueberry) spreads its dark evergreen foliage across acidic, sandy soil while feeding birds and holding hillsides together. Kalmia latifolia 'Croft Carpet' brings the intricate flower architecture that mountain laurel is known for, compressed into a prostrate form that works beautifully along a woodland path edge.
Some of the Conradina species in this collection are federally listed as threatened or endangered in the wild. Woodlanders has been growing and propagating them since they were first introduced into cultivation, which is the only legal way to offer them at all.
Rare native groundcover shrubs for sale, propagated and shipped from Aiken, South Carolina by a nursery that has been doing this work for over 45 years.
