Calycanthus floridus (Sweet Shrub) has been growing in southern gardens for centuries and still stops people cold with its burgundy, spice-scented flowers in spring. Ilex coriacea (Large Gallberry) anchors wet edges and woodland borders with a presence you don't find in the hollies at the garden center. Viburnum acerifolium goes nearly unnoticed in summer, then turns a shade of rose and lavender in fall that most gardeners don't believe is real until they see it. These are plants with genuine character — native large shrubs that carry ecological value alongside the visual kind.
