About the Conifers Collection
Conifers are the cone-bearing, mostly evergreen trees and shrubs whose foliage, needles and scales rather than broad leaves, stays on through winter. From narrow uprights to spreading, ground-hugging forms, they range far wider than the plain green pyramids most people picture, taking in blue, gold, and silver foliage, weeping and contorted habits, and dwarf selections small enough for a trough.
In the landscape conifers are the year-round framework. Where deciduous plants come and go, an evergreen holds the line: a hedge that screens in every season, a dark backdrop that sets off flowering plants, a single specimen that carries a bed through the winter months. Their strong, simple forms give a planting structure and calm, and their textures, from soft and feathery to stiff and architectural, reward a close look.
We grow conifers for the structure and shelter they give a garden in the leanest part of the year. Dense evergreen cover shields more tender plants from wind, offers birds roosting and nesting sites when little else does, and keeps a garden feeling alive and furnished through winter. Many are tough, long-lived, and undemanding once established, quietly doing their work for decades.
Give them sun and good drainage, choose the form and final size with care, since most resent hard pruning, and let the evergreens anchor plantings that change around them. Set them among our Canopy Trees for scale, and lean on our Large Shrubs and Small & Medium Shrubs for the deciduous layers that play against evergreen structure.
