1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 6-9

Seaside Alder is a medium to large deciduous shrub with glossy oval, toothed leaves. Flowers are elongated catkins followed by small pinecone-like fruits. This rare species is unusual in several respects. It flowers in the fall, other native Alders flower in spring, and it has a very curious native range. It is found in a limited area on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and adjacent Deleware, and in one area in Oklahoma. A more recently discovered population is in north Georgia. Genetic studies suggest that the now widely separated populations are distinct sub-species evolved from a once widespread population. Our material is from the eastern population. It is rare in cultivation but is adaptable to moist sunny locations and to ordinary garden soils.

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Height at Maturity: 12 - 15 feet

Alnus maritima produces flowers in the form of catkins. The male catkins are long and pendulous, typically yellowish-brown, and appear in clusters. They develop in late summer and release pollen in the spring. The female catkins are shorter, more upright, and reddish-brown. After pollination, these female catkins mature into small, woody cones that persist on the tree through winter, adding ornamental interest.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade, thriving best with ample direct sunlight.

Soil Requirements: Grows well in moist, well-draining soil; it is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and loamy soils, and prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially in the establishment phase, and performs best in areas with regular water supply, but it can tolerate brief periods of drought once established.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-8, tolerating a range of temperatures and preferring temperate climates.

Fertilization: Generally does not require heavy fertilization; an annual application of compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can support growth.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed; remove dead or damaged branches as necessary, preferably in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-free but watch for occasional leaf spots and canker; ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for wetland areas, along streams, and in gardens that require soil stabilization; it can also be used as a landscape tree for ornamental purposes due to its attractive catkins and foliage.

By following these care instructions, you can maintain a healthy and robust Alnus maritima, commonly known as the seaside alder, valued for its adaptability and ecological benefits.
