Cestrum elegans var. smithii is the soft, blush-rose form of the elegant cestrum, a fast, arching shrub that carries dense terminal clusters of slender tubular flowers in a warm pink, mildly fragrant in the evening and a steady draw for hummingbirds. Where the species runs to hot red-purple, this variety keeps things gentler, blooming from late spring well into fall, and year-round under glass.

Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 10 and everblooming in a greenhouse, the plant rewards rich soil and ample water through hot summers. In zone 8, where frost cuts the tops back, an old grower's trick keeps the crown safe: after the frost kills the stems, mound about ten inches of coarse sand over the stubs and mulch over that with pine straw, then pull the covering away as the weather warms and let the new shoots rise. Native to Mexico, and a rare, tender treasure for the warm garden. Note that, like other cestrums, all parts are poisonous, so site away from where children or livestock might browse.

Design Notes

Grow the blush cestrum in a warm, sunny border, a courtyard, or a large container near a path or window where the dusk fragrance and the hummingbird traffic can be enjoyed up close. The fast, arching habit suits the back of a bed or a spot the plant can drape, and the long bloom carries color from late spring into fall. Give full sun, rich soil, and ample summer water; in Zone 8, cut back after frost and protect the crown over winter. Site away from children and livestock, since all parts are poisonous.
