Choisya is a small genus of aromatic evergreen shrubs from the southwestern United States and Mexico, kin to citrus in the rue family, and Choisya 'Aztec Pearl' is the garden world's favorite of the tribe. The hybrid, a cross between Choisya arizonica and Choisya ternata, was raised by Peter Moore at Longstock Park Nursery in England, and the selection has proved hardier, more heat tolerant, and altogether easier in the garden than either parent.

The appeal is twofold. The foliage is fine and distinctive: glossy, dark green leaves cut into narrow, finger-like leaflets in a palmate fan, aromatic when brushed or crushed, betraying the citrus kinship at once. Then, in spring and often again in fall, pink-tinged buds open to clusters of white, star-shaped flowers with a sweet, orange-blossom fragrance that draws bees, the very scent behind the genus's common name, Mexican orange.

In the garden, 'Aztec Pearl' is a neat, rounded, well-behaved evergreen for the front or middle of a sunny border, a foundation planting, or a large container, holding good form with little fuss. Site where the fragrance can be met in passing, near a path, a doorway, or a seating area, and pair with other sun lovers in well-drained ground. The fine texture and year-round green make the shrub a quiet, dependable foil for showier, looser neighbors.

A neat, rounded, dependable evergreen for the front or middle of a sunny border, a foundation planting, or a large container, holding good form with little fuss. Site where the orange-blossom fragrance can be met in passing, near a path, a doorway, or a seating area, and give well-drained ground in sun to part shade. The fine, aromatic foliage and year-round green make 'Aztec Pearl' a quiet foil for showier, looser neighbors, and a reliable structure plant through the seasons.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White star-shaped, orange-blossom fragrance, spring and often fall

Flower. In spring, and often again in fall, pink-tinged buds open to loose clusters of white, five-petalled, star-shaped flowers, sweetly scented of orange blossom and busy with bees.

Foliage. Glossy, dark green, evergreen leaves cut into narrow, finger-like leaflets in a palmate fan, aromatic when brushed, the citrus kinship plain at a touch.

Fragrance. Both flower and leaf are scented: the blooms of orange blossom, the crushed foliage sharp and resinous, so the shrub earns a place where it will be touched and passed close by.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; the fullest flowering comes in sun, with light afternoon shade welcome in the hottest gardens.

Soil. Fertile, well-drained ground; 'Aztec Pearl' dislikes heavy, wet soil and may suffer in cold, soggy winters.

Water. Water through establishment and in summer drought; once settled the shrub is moderately drought tolerant.

Pruning. Little needed; a light trim after the main spring flush keeps the rounded shape and can encourage a second autumn bloom.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 9; shelter from cold, drying winds at the cold edge of the range.
