A cold-hardy citrus with a Woodlanders pedigree. Woodlanders has long led in offering citrus and citrus hybrids that stand outdoors beyond the usual citrus belt, and the calamandarin is one of the toughest. Likely a hybrid of a mandarin, Citrus reticulata, and a calamondin, the calamandarin blends easy-peeling, tangerine-like fruit with the cold tolerance that calamondin brings to the cross.

The plant is a handsome, rounded small tree carrying glossy evergreen leaves, fragrant white spring blossoms, and heavy crops of small, tangerine-like fruit. The fruit ripens early and hangs long on the branches, staying good on the tree for weeks, so the harvest stretches through the season.

This selection came out of the Florida Citrus Arboretum, chosen by Woodlanders as one of the hardier survivors of the severe freeze of 1990, and has proven both hardy and very fruitful in the trial ground at Aiken, South Carolina. A genuine piece of citrus-breeding history for the adventurous southern gardener.

Grow the calamandarin in full sun and well-drained soil, as a patio or courtyard specimen in zones 8 to 10, or in a movable container to overwinter indoors farther north. By federal citrus quarantine, we cannot ship citrus to Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, or Texas.
