Parrotia persica 'Lamplighter' is a rare variegated form of the Persian ironwood, grown above all for the foliage: each leaf carries a broad, irregular border of creamy white around a grey-green center, so the whole canopy reads as soft, dappled light through the growing season. New growth can flush pink and rose before the variegation settles, and the effect is luminous rather than loud, a tree that brightens a shaded corner the way a lit lamp does, which is presumably how the selection came by the name.

Beyond the leaves, 'Lamplighter' offers the same four-season virtues that make the species so admired. In late winter, petalless clusters of crimson stamens open on the bare grey branches before the foliage returns. With age the bark exfoliates into a patchwork of cream, grey, and tan, and in autumn the variegated leaves turn soft shades of yellow, orange, and red before they fall, so the tree earns a second and third look long after the spring flush.

The one thing to know about a white-variegated tree is that the pale leaf edges burn in fierce sun and drying wind. Site 'Lamplighter' in filtered light, or morning sun with afternoon shade, in a cooler garden with steady moisture, and the variegation stays clean and bright all season. Give fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil, water regularly through the first seasons to establish deep roots, and mulch to keep the shallow roots cool.

Slower and more compact than the plain green tree, 'Lamplighter' works as a specimen where the foliage can be read at close range, near a path, a patio, or a shaded courtyard, or as a luminous accent at a woodland edge set against darker evergreens that throw the cream margins forward. A collector's tree and a designer's alike, for anyone who wants year-round structure with a rare, light-catching twist and very little maintenance in return.

A light-catching specimen for shade. Site 'Lamplighter' where the cream-margined foliage can be read at close range, near a path, a patio, or a shaded courtyard, or as a luminous accent at a woodland edge set against darker evergreens that throw the variegation forward. Slower and more compact than the plain green Persian ironwood, the tree brings four-season interest of variegated leaves, exfoliating bark, and crimson late-winter flowers to a shaded corner. Give filtered light and shelter from hot afternoon sun to keep the pale edges from scorching, steady moisture, and companions such as ferns, hellebores, and broadleaf evergreens that welcome the same cool, even conditions.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Petalless clusters of crimson stamens on bare branches in late winter; cream-edged foliage, yellow-to-red in fall

Flower. Petalless clusters of crimson stamens open on the bare grey branches in late winter, before the leaves return; small but bright against the cold.

Foliage. Grey-green leaves broadly edged in creamy white, pink-flushed when young, turning soft yellow, orange, and red in fall; the pale margins scorch in hot sun, so give shade in warm climates.

Bark. Exfoliates with age into a patchwork of cream, grey, and tan, a quiet winter feature shared with the species.
