Podranea ricasoliana, the pink trumpet vine or Port St. John's creeper, is a fast-growing evergreen climber from the warm regions of South Africa, a member of the trumpet-creeper family, Bignoniaceae, prized for showy, trumpet-shaped flowers.

The plant was first cultivated in the eastern part of the country, around the area known as Port St. John's, which gave rise to one of the common names. From the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the vine traveled to other regions with similar climates, the Mediterranean, Australia, and parts of the United States, and quickly won a following.

The appeal is obvious: vigorous growth and a talent for clothing large walls, fences, and structures in lush foliage and clusters of soft-to-vibrant pink flowers, each flaring trumpet marked with a deeper magenta throat and carrying a light, sweet scent that draws bees and butterflies. Bloom runs from late summer into fall, bringing strong color to the garden as the season cools.

Grow the pink trumpet vine on a sturdy trellis, fence, or wall in a sunny, well-drained spot, and give ample room to climb and spread. In zones 9 to 11 the plant holds evergreen; in the cooler parts of zones 8 and 9 the top freezes to the ground and returns with fast growth in warm weather, so mulch the base with sand and pine straw for winter, or grow in a container that can shelter from frost.

Design Notes

A fast flowering cover for a sunny wall. Give the pink trumpet vine a sturdy trellis, fence, arbor, or wall in full sun and room to run, where the clusters of pink trumpets and dense evergreen foliage can screen and soften a structure. The late-season bloom brings color as the garden cools, and pairs well with other warm-climate climbers. Vigorous and quick, so site where the growth can be managed, and in the cooler parts of the range treat the plant as a fast dieback climber that returns from the root, mulched over winter.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Soft pink trumpets with magenta throats, late summer to fall

Flower. Large, trumpet-shaped flowers in showy clusters, soft to vibrant pink with a deeper magenta throat, each two to three inches long with five flaring lobes; lightly sweet-scented and a draw for bees and butterflies, from late summer into fall.

Foliage. Dark green, glossy, pinnately compound leaves of five to nine oval leaflets, leathery and lush, forming a dense screen when trained on a wall or trellis.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; at least six hours of sun for the best bloom.

Soil. Fertile, well-drained ground, from sand to loam; enrich with organic matter.

Water. Keep evenly moist in the growing season with good drainage; moderately drought tolerant once established.

Pruning. Fast and vigorous; prune after flowering to shape and control size, cutting back hard if needed.

Hardiness. USDA zones 9 to 11; in the cooler parts of zones 8 to 9 the top dies back and returns, so mulch the crown or overwinter a potted plant.
