Sassafras

Sassafras albidum

$23.00 Sold out

| Hardiness Zones 4-9

This native tree widespread in eastern U.S. is well known and a great ornamental but it is rarely available for landscape use. It can grow 30 to 60 feet tall and the entire, two, or mostly three-lobed leaves turn vivid yellow, orange and red in fall. The small flowers in early spring appear before the leaves and are yellow. The female trees produce blue-black fruit relished by birds. The plant is highly aromatic and the bark of the roots is used to make Sassafras tea. The ground leaves are the file often used as seasoning in Louisiana. Plant in well-drained acid or neutral soil and remove suckers if single trunk tree is desired.
