The saw palmetto, Serenoa repens, usually creeps along the ground on a buried, branching stem, which is what most of the Southeast knows as palmetto scrub. Now and then a stand grows differently, lifting upright trunks several feet into the air, and Woodlanders grew this arborescent form from seed collected off exactly those trees with trunks. The leaves, the creamy fragrant summer flowers, and the dark fruit are the ordinary saw palmetto's; the habit is the whole point, a small, slow, trunked palm with a bearing all its own.
More shade tolerant than the open-scrub form, and as tough as the species in every other way. Mulch young plants heavily where palms are marginal, or pot on arrival and hold under cover the first winter. A reference listing for a form we have grown; our regular green and blue saw palmettos are listed separately.
inflorescence: creamy white fragrant, bisexual flowers.
