Palm Grass
Setaria palmifolia
Pickup currently unavailable at Aiken Nursery
Palm grass earns the name at a glance. The broad, pleated blades of Setaria palmifolia fold and arch like the fronds of a young palm, bringing a lush, tropical boldness to a border that most grasses cannot match. This is a plant grown for presence and texture rather than flower, a bright green statement in beds, containers, and the wilder corners of a garden where form is welcome.
Setaria palmifolia is native to India and Southeast Asia, where the species threads through moist woodland and forest edges, and is grown across the tropics both as an ornamental and, in the highlands of New Guinea, as a minor food crop for the edible young shoots and seed. The Woodlanders stock carries a small story of its own: this line grew from seed collected in the streetside plantings of Buenos Aires, gathered far from any ancestral soil yet perfectly at home beside the stone walls and iron gates of the city.
In a Southern garden the grass settles in quickly, growing fast and full in sun or dappled shade wherever the soil stays rich and moist. Palm grass is hardier than the tropical look suggests, returning as a perennial in zone 8b and warmer and often resprouting even where a hard frost cuts the blades to the ground. The plant also seeds about freely in mild climates, so site palm grass where stray seedlings can be pulled or mown, and deadhead the arching seed spikes where a tidier planting is wanted.
Use palm grass as a bold foliage accent in a tropical or subtropical border, a cottage or meadow-style planting, or a large container where the pleated blades can spill and catch the light. The broad leaves read well against fine-textured companions and the flat fans of true palms alike, and a single clump brings an easy, jungly lushness to a shaded seat or a poolside bed. Give room, moisture, and warmth, and the grass will do the rest.
