  • Light: Prefers partial to full sun. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help protect the foliage from sun scorch.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during the plant’s establishment phase. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but prefers regular watering in dry periods.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining, loamy soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid overly acidic or waterlogged soils.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can promote overly lush growth that’s more susceptible to disease.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is required for this natural shape, but you may trim lightly in early spring to shape or control size. Avoid heavy pruning during hot months to reduce stress on the plant.
  • Mulching: Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Keep mulch away from the base of the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Winter Care: Hardy to USDA zones 5-9. In colder zones, protect from drying winds, as boxwood can be susceptible to winter burn.

Pests and Diseases: Generally low-maintenance, but monitor for boxwood blight and leaf miners. Ensuring good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent common issues.
