This Camellia sasanqua variety is a relatively new selection of this favorite fall blooming Camellia. It is an upright bushy evergreen shrub with single to semi-double flowers that are large, rounded, light lavender pink with wavy petals. Waning flowers have shown to take on a grayish-blue cast before petals fall away completely. Woodlanders has proudly grown this variety in the ground for many years here in Aiken, and our specimen at the old nursery site has turned out to be a real showstopper when much of the garden is winding down for the year. Camellias are best in semi-shade in sandy slightly acidic soil which is kept mulched and watered. Camellia sasanqua is native to Japan.

Flower, Fruit and Foliage

Flower Structure: Produces large, semi-double to double flowers.

Color: The flowers of "Misty Moon" are typically a soft white with a pink/lavender blush, creating a stunning visual display against the dark green foliage.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to dappled sunlight. It can tolerate full sun, especially in cooler climates, but some shade during the hottest part of the day is beneficial in warmer regions to prevent leaf scorch.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Incorporate organic matter such as peat moss, pine bark, or compost to improve soil structure and fertility.

Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Water deeply to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and maintain a cool root environment. Reduce watering in winter to prevent root rot.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. Prefers moderate temperatures and high humidity. Protect from harsh winter winds and frost, especially in colder regions. In very cold climates, consider growing in containers that can be moved indoors during extreme cold spells.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers. A light feeding after flowering can promote healthy growth.

Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove dead or diseased wood. Light pruning encourages bushier growth and better air circulation. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce the following year's blooms.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can be susceptible to scale insects, aphids, and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Root rot can occur if the soil is kept too wet.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as an understory plant. Its vibrant blooms and attractive foliage make it a standout in any landscape. Provide a protected spot away from direct wind and afternoon sun for best results.
