Juglans nigra, the Black Walnut, is one of the great trees of eastern North America—a towering, long-lived hardwood prized for both its fruit and its timber. Native from the Appalachians and Midwest to the Mississippi Valley, it is most at home in deep, rich, moist but well-drained soils along river bottoms and fertile uplands.

Its growth habit is somewhat open, with large pinnate leaves that leaf out late in spring and fall earlier than many of its woodland companions. In summer, the tree casts a broad, airy shade; in autumn, its golden foliage drops early, making way for its most famous gift: the large, round, hard-shelled nuts. These nuts, encased in thick green husks, have long been valued for their rich, oily kernels—a staple in traditional baking and the essential flavor behind the best “black walnut brownies.” Wildlife, too, depends on the crop: squirrels, turkeys, and other woodland creatures feast on its bounty.

Yet it is not only for its fruit that Black Walnut is renowned. Its dark, fine-grained wood is among the most valuable of all American hardwoods. Coveted for furniture, cabinetry, gunstocks, and veneers, Black Walnut has been a cornerstone of American craftsmanship for centuries. To plant this tree is to grow a living heirloom: a gift not only to one’s own table but also to generations yet to come.

In the garden or landscape, Black Walnut is best reserved for large properties where its size—often 50 to 75 feet tall, sometimes exceeding 100 feet—can be fully appreciated. Care should be taken in siting, as the roots exude juglone, a natural compound that can inhibit the growth of some nearby plants. Still, with wise placement, it serves as a majestic shade tree, productive orchard specimen, and enduring symbol of the North American forest.

To stand beneath a Black Walnut is to stand in the company of history: a tree that has nourished, sheltered, and furnished generations, and which remains today a powerful presence in both field and woodlot.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Flowers
Inconspicuous and wind-pollinated, the two sexes apart on the same tree. The males hang in slender, drooping yellow-green catkins from last year's wood as the leaves emerge; the females are small and easy to miss at the tips of new growth. No fragrance, no show. The interest is entirely in what follows.

Foliage
Large, pinnately compound leaves of many paired leaflets, aromatic when bruised, casting a light and open shade. Among the last trees to leaf out in spring and among the first to let go in fall, turning briefly clear yellow before they drop.

Fruit
The famous gift. A round green husk the size of a tennis ball, thick and aromatic, wrapped around the hard, deeply furrowed nut and its rich kernel. The husks stain everything they touch, the source of an old brown dye, and fall generously beneath a mature tree in autumn, feeding squirrels well into the next year.
