The name is a promise the tree keeps only at the very end of the year. Coccinea is Latin for scarlet, and scarlet oak earns it in late October, well after the other oaks have turned and dropped, when the whole crown ignites into a clean, carrying red that holds for weeks and can be seen across a valley. It is, on a good tree in the right soil, the best fall color the genus offers, which is saying something. They are an oak of dry, sandy, acid uplands across the eastern states, the ridges and gravelly slopes where water runs off fast, and that upbringing makes them at home in a difficult yard: drought is no trouble, and unlike the pin oak they so often get mistaken for, they do not yellow and sulk. (The way to tell the two apart is the leaf: scarlet's sinuses are cut in clean C-curves, pin's in tighter U's, and scarlet's acorn sits deeper in its turbaned cup.) The crown opens with age into something broad and airy, casting a broken, dappled shade rather than a heavy one, and Washington, D.C. thought enough of them to make scarlet oak the official tree of the capital. They are slower to find in the trade than the easy red and pin oaks, which is the whole argument for planting one. Give them sun and a soil on the dry, acid side, and wait for October to make your case for you.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Foliage
The reason to plant them, and the reason for the name. Leaves three to seven inches long, cut into seven to nine deep lobes with wide rounded sinuses and bristle-tipped teeth, glossy dark green and faintly leathery through summer, paler beneath. The fall turn comes late, well after the other oaks, and runs to a clean, carrying scarlet to crimson that holds for weeks before dropping. Some trees keep their dead leaves into winter, the way pin oaks do, until spring pushes them off.

Flowers
Monoecious and wind-pollinated. In spring, as the leaves unfold, slender yellow-green male catkins dangle in loose clusters from the previous year's wood, while the female flowers sit small and almost unseen in the new leaf axils. No scent and no display, just the quiet start of the acorn crop.

Acorns
Oval and a half-inch to an inch long, a warm chestnut brown, set a third to half deep in a bowl-shaped cup of tight scales, often with fine concentric rings at the tip. As a red-oak-group tree they take two seasons to ripen, falling in autumn. Bitter with tannin, but squirrels, deer, turkeys, and blue jays clear them quickly all the same.

Care

Read our full care guide

  • Habit: Pyramidal in youth, broadening to a rounded, open crown
  • Size: 60–80 feet tall; 40–50 foot spread
  • Light: Full sun for best structure and fall color
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, acidic soils
  • Tolerance: Excellent drought tolerance once established

Its youthful habit is reminiscent of Quercus palustris, with a strong central leader and tiered branching. Over time, the crown opens and gains breadth without losing refinement.
