Juniperus rigida, the temple or needle juniper, is a graceful conifer of the windswept hills and old temple gardens of China, Korea, and Japan, distinctive for long, slender, sharply pointed needles that catch the light. 'Pendula' is the weeping form, unfurling those bright needles from arching, drooping limbs in a cascade of green that moves with the wind, a plant of quiet, sculptural dignity.

The needles are the signature, longer and more pronounced than most junipers and genuinely sharp to the touch, giving the tree a fine, feathery texture up close and a soft, flowing silhouette from a distance. In winter the foliage takes on a burnished reddish-bronze cast, a subtle seasonal shift that suits the plant's contemplative, weeping habit.

Temple juniper asks little: a well-drained site open to the sun, and support or training in youth to lift the weeping form, since the drooping habit needs a leader staked upright to develop a cascading specimen. Hardy and undemanding once established, the tree tolerates heat, cold, and poor soil, and is a favorite subject for bonsai and Japanese-style gardens.

Use 'Pendula' as a specimen or accent where the weeping form can be seen whole, beside a gate or water feature, at the turn of a path, in a gravel or Japanese-style garden, or spilling over a low wall. The architectural, flowing silhouette evokes age and stillness, and reads beautifully against stone, raked gravel, or a plain background. Give room for the cascade to develop.
