1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-10

This Vitex is a prostrate trailing shrub with rounded deciduous bluish green leaves about 2" in diameter. It has bright blue flowers in late summer. While a salt tolerant plant being used for seashore and dune planting it has become invasive in some seaside areas of the Carolinas and is being outlawed and erradicated in some localities where it threatens natural beach plant communities. It does not appear to pose a threat inland. Native southeast Asia to Australia.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun. Vitex rotundifolia thrives best in full sunlight, which encourages the healthiest growth and most prolific flowering. It can tolerate partial shade but is less likely to produce abundant blooms in lower light conditions. Full sun is ideal for this coastal plant, which is adapted to bright, open environments.

Soil Requirements: Prefers sandy, well-draining soil. This plant is naturally found in coastal areas, so it performs best in soils that are sandy and well-draining, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (6.0-7.5). It is highly tolerant of poor, infertile soils and can thrive in sandy, coastal soils where many other plants would struggle. The plant is also salt-tolerant, making it suitable for coastal gardens.

Watering: Requires minimal watering once established. Vitex rotundifolia is highly drought-tolerant and requires little water after it is established. During the first growing season, water regularly to help the plant establish a strong root system. After that, it will require minimal supplemental watering, even in dry conditions. Overwatering should be avoided, as it prefers dry to moderately moist conditions.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-11. Vitex rotundifolia is well-suited to warm, temperate, and subtropical climates. It can tolerate high temperatures and is highly resistant to salt spray, making it ideal for coastal environments. The plant is less tolerant of frost and cold and may suffer damage in areas where temperatures regularly drop below freezing.

Fertilization: Typically does not require fertilization. This plant is well-adapted to poor soils and generally does not need additional feeding. If you choose to fertilize, apply a light, balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can encourage leggy growth and reduce flowering.

Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring to control growth and shape the plant. Vitex rotundifolia can spread aggressively, so regular pruning may be necessary to keep it in check, especially in confined spaces. Pruning can also help maintain a more compact, tidy appearance. It responds well to pruning and can be cut back hard if necessary to rejuvenate the plant.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by spider mites or scale insects. Vitex rotundifolia is hardy and generally free from significant pests or diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. The plant is also resistant to deer browsing, making it a good choice for areas with deer pressure.
