Razzlequat

Eremocitrus glauca × Meyer lemon

Edible

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-11

Woodlanders has been a leader in offering a wide range of Citrus and Citrus hybrids which are hardy outdoors beyond the normal Citrus growing areas. The 'Razzlequat' is an unusual and relatively cold hardy citrus hybrid with thorny, wiry branches and small narrow leaves. It is a hybrid between the Australian Desert Lime and probably the 'Meyer' Lemon.

The small lemon shaped fruits are unlike other citrus. They are only semi-segmented and the little round juice filled vesicles inside the fruit are quite loose and easily separated. They contain a rather sour juice. Southeastern Citrus expert Tom McClendon says of the fruit: "They were tart but good, much like a lime and with no unpleasant aftertaste at all."

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun. This hybrid thrives best with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun ensures the best growth and fruit production, but it can also tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates where intense midday sun might be too strong.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). This hybrid is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and even clay soils, as long as they are well-draining. Amending the soil with organic matter like compost can improve its structure and fertility.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is preferable to promote deep root growth, especially during the growing season and dry periods. However, the Eremocitrus parentage provides some drought tolerance, making the plant relatively hardy once established.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11. Prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate some heat and drought conditions, thanks to its desert lime parentage. It should be protected from frost and freezing temperatures, as it is not frost-tolerant. In cooler regions, consider growing this hybrid in containers that can be moved indoors during winter.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for citrus plants in early spring, and continue feeding throughout the growing season. An additional light application of organic fertilizer, such as compost or fish emulsion, can provide necessary nutrients. Avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruiting.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. Light pruning helps maintain a tidy appearance and promotes better air circulation. Regular pruning encourages denser growth and can improve fruit production.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but can occasionally attract common citrus pests such as aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew and root rot. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of disease or pest infestation.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
