1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

Ficus roxburghii, also known as Ficus auriculata, is a great spreading woody shrub in frost-free climates and a big bold perennial in zone 8. It is native to India. The very large 15" rounded glossy leaves create a dramatic tropical effect. It has proven root hardy for years for Joe LeVert in nearby Augusta, GA and this is the source of our cuttings. This dramatic foliage plant should be a must for tropical effect in protected Deep South gardens with good soil and adequate moisture.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright, indirect light when grown indoors, but can also handle direct sunlight if acclimated gradually. If grown outdoors, a location with full sun to partial shade is ideal, as too much direct sunlight can cause leaf burn.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is preferred. Ficus roxburghii is adaptable to various soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils, provided they have good drainage. Adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure can improve soil fertility and structure.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Ficus roxburghii prefers high humidity, so misting the leaves regularly or placing a humidity tray nearby can help maintain the necessary moisture levels.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-10. Prefers warm temperatures between 60-85°F (16-29°C) and high humidity. It is sensitive to frost and cold temperatures, so if grown in cooler regions, it should be kept indoors or in a greenhouse during the winter months. Consistent humidity is crucial for this species, especially when grown indoors.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and continue feeding monthly during the growing season (spring through early fall). Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows down. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to salt buildup in the soil.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. Regular pruning helps maintain a manageable size and encourages bushier growth. Ficus roxburghii can tolerate heavier pruning if necessary, but it's best to prune lightly and regularly to avoid stressing the plant.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract common ficus pests such as scale, aphids, and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like leaf spot and root rot. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of pests or disease.
