'John Blue' is a selection of Vaccinium darrowii, a dense evergreen shrub with small blue-green leaves. It was selected and named for its ornamental qualities by blueberry researchers at North Carolina State University. It makes an attractive garden subject with typical small bell-like blueberry flowers and small edible fruits. It is native to the Deep South where it grows in pinelands on sandy acid soils that are well-drained or at least never flood. It should be grown in a sunny location for best effect.
