The Japanese clethra is grown for bark as much as bloom. Clethra barbinervis is a tall, tree-like deciduous shrub or small tree from the mountains of Japan and Korea, carrying somewhat fragrant terminal racemes of white flowers in summer, in the same sweet-scented family as the native summersweets. But the real distinction is the bark: smooth and polished, gray to warm brown, and exfoliating in age to a handsome patchwork that makes this one of the finest small trees for the winter garden.

Long valued in East Asian gardens, Japanese clethra brings a quiet, four-season presence: fragrant white summer flowers when little else is blooming, clean green foliage, and the polished, peeling trunk that becomes the main event once the leaves fall. Give the plant room to show the bark, and site where a winter path or window can take in the trunk.

In the garden, plant Japanese clethra in part shade to full sun and moist, acid, well-drained soil, at a woodland edge, in a shaded border, or as a specimen where the bark can be read at close range. Keep the roots cool and evenly moist, underplant with ferns and shade lovers, and let the polished trunk carry the cold months.

Design Notes

A four-season small tree grown above all for polished, exfoliating bark, best sited where the trunk can be read at close range: beside a winter path, a patio, or a window, at a woodland edge, or as a specimen in a shaded border. Give part shade to full sun and moist, acid, well-drained soil, and limb up the plant in age to show the bark. Fragrant white summer flowers and warm fall color round out the year. Underplant with ferns and other shade lovers, and pair with the native summersweets for a long season of clethra bloom.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

white, somewhat fragrant, summer

Flower. Fragrant, white, bottlebrush racemes at the branch tips in mid to late summer, sweetly scented and worked by bees, opening when few other shrubs are in bloom.

Bark. The signature of the plant. Smooth and polished, gray to warm cinnamon-brown, exfoliating with age into a handsome patchwork that makes this a standout in the winter garden.

Foliage. Clean, dark green, toothed leaves clustered toward the branch tips, turning yellow to warm red in fall before dropping to reveal the trunk.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Part shade to full sun; a little afternoon shade prevents leaf scorch and holds foliage color in hot climates.

Soil. Moist, acid to neutral, well-drained, humus-rich ground; tolerant of wet soil and a good choice for a rain garden or damp edge.

Water. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially through establishment and summer heat; mulch to keep the roots cool.

Pruning. Prune in late winter to remove dead or weak wood and, in age, to limb up the plant and reveal the polished bark.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 8.
