Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a vigorous, corm-forming perennial and one of the best summer plants for the southern garden, multiplying steadily in good, moist, neutral to acid soil in sun or light shade. Tall, arching spikes of brilliant red-orange, flame-colored flowers rise over the clump through early to midsummer, held above fans of pleated, sword-like green leaves.

The flowers are magnets for hummingbirds and make superb, long-lasting cut stems for the vase. This South African montbretia has been extensively hybridized, and 'Lucifer' is the most famous of all the selections; some growers suggest our stock may not be the true 'Lucifer', but we have found the plant to be a first-rate garden performer whatever the label.

Site 'Lucifer' at the middle or back of a sunny border, in a hot-color scheme, or in a bold drift where the flame spikes can be watched for hummingbirds, and pair with salvias, cannas, grasses, and other strong summer companions. The clump dies back after frost and returns reliably from the corms; mulch in the coldest zones.

'Lucifer' pairs beautifully with salvias, cannas, ornamental grasses, and other strong summer companions, and multiplies steadily by corm into a dependable stand. Give moist, well-drained soil and sun, and mulch in the coldest zones.
