Physostegia virginiana, the obedient plant, is a familiar native of moist meadows and streamsides across eastern North America, and 'Vivid' is the compact, richly colored selection that has become a garden standard. Upright spikes of deep rose-pink, tubular flowers rise on square, mint-family stems in mid to late summer, holding strong color into early fall when much of the border is fading.

The common name comes from a small charm: each flower sits on a hinged stalk and stays where a finger nudges it, left or right along the spike, so a child can rearrange a whole raceme. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds work the nectar-rich flowers steadily, which makes the plant a fixture of pollinator and cottage gardens alike.

'Vivid' is more compact than the wild species, standing two to three feet, but keeps the family's vigor: the rhizomes spread steadily into a broad colony, so site where roaming is welcome, plant in a contained bed, or divide every few years to keep the clump in bounds. The spread that some gardeners curb is exactly the trait that fills a difficult moist corner for others.

Give full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil, and the plant thrives even in the wet ground of a rain garden or pond edge. Mass 'Vivid' for a strong vertical rhythm in a natural border or meadow planting, pair with asters, coneflowers, and black-eyed Susans, and cut the stems to the ground in late fall or early spring.

Design Notes

Vertical rhythm for a moist border. Mass 'Vivid' in a natural border, a meadow planting, a rain garden, or a pond edge, where the upright rose-pink spikes give strong late-summer structure and the hinged flowers charm every visitor. The steady rhizomatous spread suits a spot where filling ground is welcome, or a contained bed where the clump can be divided every few years. Pair with asters, coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and switchgrass, and let the nectar-rich spikes feed bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while deer pass by.
